Product Builds

The bits your website cannot do yet.

Sometimes a website needs to do a job that no plugin does properly. Take bookings the way your business actually takes bookings. Sell courses. Handle a process nobody else has. We build those properly, on WordPress, so they work with the site you already have rather than sitting awkwardly beside it.

The real problem

Most custom work goes wrong before anybody writes any code.

Complicated projects quoted from a phone call go wrong in the same way every time. The price was a guess, the scope was assumed rather than agreed, and the argument arrives in month three when somebody says they thought that was included.

The other way it goes wrong is quieter: something gets built, nobody maintains it, and it breaks against an update a year later.

Bookings still come in by phone and email. People ring during your busiest hours, or message in the evening and wait until morning.

The workaround costs real time every week. There is a job your website cannot do, you have looked at the plugins, and none of them fits without changing how you work.

It is held together across three places. A payment link, a shared drive and a spreadsheet you maintain by hand, and they only agree with each other when you make them.

Everybody quoted a different number. Wildly different prices from different people usually means nobody has actually defined what is being built.

Nobody is maintaining it. WordPress and its plugins change constantly, and something built today will eventually break against a future update.

What we do

What we build, and how it stays working.

Bookings taken online the way your business actually takes them: a calendar built around your real availability, confirmations and reminders sent automatically, payments or deposits if you want them. A piece of functionality built specifically for your business, when nothing off the shelf does the job properly. Gated content, courses and members paying you every month, with progress tracking and recurring payments. All three are priced from, because the jobs vary enormously.

If something off the shelf does the job for forty pounds, we will tell you that rather than quoting you fifteen hundred to rebuild it. Saying so costs us a sale and keeps us worth calling next time. Custom is for when the ready-made answer genuinely does not fit, which usually means your process is unusual, or that two systems need to work together in a way nobody anticipated.

Anything custom needs looking after. WordPress updates itself constantly, and custom code that nobody maintains will eventually break, usually at the worst moment. Everything we build comes with a monthly plan that keeps it working, and it is fair to say plainly why that plan is not optional. Custom code is a permanent maintenance liability: without a maintenance arrangement, either you pay for the same repair over and over or we fix it free forever, and neither of those is honest.

If what you want does not fit any of those, we scope it properly first, so the price is real. Paid Discovery buys discovery sessions, a full written specification, a clear statement of what it will and will not do, and a fixed price for the build itself. It exists because of a specific failure: projects quoted from a phone call go wrong the same way every time, and the argument arrives in month three. The fee credits in full against the build if you go ahead within ninety days, and you keep the specification either way.

How it works

Scoped in writing, then built.

Anything that does not fit a standard product goes through the same four steps, so the price you get is real.

1
Discovery

Sessions to work out what the thing actually has to do, rather than assuming it from a conversation.

2
Written specification

A full specification setting out what it will do and, just as usefully, what it will not. You keep it either way.

3
Fixed price, then build

The build is priced from the specification rather than estimated, so the number does not move once work starts.

4
Kept working

A monthly plan covering updates, compatibility as WordPress changes around it, and small adjustments.

Pricing

Scoped first, then built.

Three things come up most often, plus the discovery step that turns an unusual requirement into a specification and a real price.

Questions

Things people usually ask.

Yes. We build on WordPress, so what we make works with the site you already have rather than sitting awkwardly beside it. You are adding to your site, not replacing it.
Then we will tell you. If something off the shelf does the job properly for forty pounds, we are not going to quote you fifteen hundred to rebuild it. We only build custom when there is a real reason the ready-made option will not do.
It depends which of the two things you are buying, and we will always tell you which. Anything bespoke we build for you is yours and portable, so you can take it elsewhere. Our portal platform is licensed rather than sold, which is exactly why it costs what it does instead of what a system built from nothing would cost.
Everything we build comes with a monthly plan that keeps it working as WordPress and its plugins change around it. Custom code left unmaintained will eventually break, usually at the worst possible moment, which is why the plan is not an optional extra here. If you stop it, the thing we built stops being looked after.
Often, yes, but we look first. We will go through what is there and tell you honestly whether it is worth carrying on with it or rebuilding it properly. We would rather say that up front than take it on and find out later it was built on sand.
