The detail

You get a member area with gated content, a course structure with progress tracking, recurring member payments, and email automation for signup and renewal. Each of those on its own is a piece of work. Together they have to agree with each other constantly: somebody whose payment fails should lose access, somebody who renews should get it back, and somebody halfway through a course should not lose their progress.

It takes around four to six weeks, and it carries an ongoing support burden that does not end, which is what the monthly plan covers. Membership sites are the clearest example of software you cannot build and walk away from, because you now have people paying you every month and expecting to get in.
